After the second failed attempt the family was sent to the U.S. base in Guantanamo, Cuba, while authorities figured out what to do with them.
With help from a federal judge, the U.S. and Costa Rica agreed that the family could live in Costa Rica. But the Grass family didn't stay longAfter a 2,000-mile journey that took him through Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico, Grass recently led his wife, Isora, 27, and their 5-year-old son, Luis, across the Mexican border and onto the American soil they coveted for so long.
Entering the United States from Mexico without papers was the easiest part. They surrendered immediately to police in Brownsville, Texas. Grass knew the U.S. government almost always lets Cuban exiles stay as long as they've reached land.
