We may soon see fresh veggies between the beer, cigars and pork rinds at our neighborhood 7-Eleven stores.

7-Eleven has seen the future, and it's no longer six-packs, snuff and Slim Jims.

It's sliced carrots. Also bananas, lots of bananas.

Put a rack of bananas by the cash register, came the word from 7-Eleven headquarters, and watch business get hotter than a bag of Flamin' Hot Cheetos.

McAfee employees at risk for identity theft

Imagine you are an employee of a very large computer anti-virus and security software company.

Imagine further that your employer told you that your personal data was lost and that you and your co-workers are at risk for identity theft.

No, McAfee didn’t lose the data. It was the independent auditing firm hired by McAfee that lost the disc full of sensitive data.

It is ironic that a company, dedicated to protect sensitive computer data, would have their employees at risk for identity theft.

It is also ironic that an accounting/auditing firm, dedicated to protecting shareholders from problems within a client company, would subject employees of that company to high risk even if the disc was lost inadvertently.

Willies Willys: pure biodiesel

Named for country music singer and biodiesel advocate Willie Nelson, the“Willie’s Willys” is a biodiesel-powered recreation of a 1941 Willys pickup truck (inset photo).

Each Willie Willys is powered by a 6.5-litre, twin-turbo diesel engine with the production version generating 350 horsepower. The transmission is a six-speed automatic.

The truck has spark plugs, unusual for a diesel engine, which the designers state will help reduce particulate emissions. Tests indicated the truck should average thirty-eight miles per gallon.

While the frame is made of conventional stainless steel and the truck bed is oak, the body is made of a soy-based resin.

Treehugger would say: “this bright red truck is pure green.”

Each of the 500 limited-edition Willie Willys trucks will cost $97,000.

Need for greener car A/C cooling agent

European carmakers are scrambling for more natural coolants to power car air conditioners before the EU ban on HFC-134a goes into effect on January 1. 2011.

Carmakers who market vehicles in the United States will also need to look for greener coolants for vehicle air conditioners because of a proposed ban on HFC in California.

I have always been puzzled why they haven’t found a way to use ammonia, which doesn’t linger in the atmosphere. Perhaps it is too difficult to deal with the toxicity of ammonia.

Carbon dioxide is probably what will be used eventually if they can make it efficient enough.

If I don’t retire my old Buick soon, I could be one of the few still using a third generation air conditioner powered by freon.

Freon is the trade name for the chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s) refrigerant made by DuPont. Freon powered air conditioners were banned in motor vehicles built after 1994.

Physicist proposes new calendar

A Physicist is proposing a new calendar that would have Christmas, New Years, Labor Day, your birthday and all the rest falling on the same day of the week year after year. Link here.

Using this proposed calendar would make a favorite old poem obsolete:

30 days hath September, April, June and November
and all the rest I can’t remember.
There’s a calendar on the wall
so don’t bother me at all.

Some are teachers - some are educators

A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick at a private school. They would apply the lipstick in the restroom. After they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of lip prints. The custodian would remove lip marks from the mirror each night. The girls would put them back the next day.

Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the girls restroom and met them there with the custodian. The principal explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night.

To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the custodian to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and used it to clean the mirror.

Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.

We often hear people say they give more than 100%.
