Arthur C. Clark (pictured), best known as a science fiction writer, died in his adopted country of Sri-Lanka (formerly Ceylon). Clarke wrote more than 70 books.
Sir Arthur Clarke’s most well known book was 2001: A Space Odyssey.
He battled debilitating post-polio syndrome since the 1960s and sometimes used a wheelchair.
In the 1980’s he hosted the thirteen-part TV series Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World as well as Arthur C. Clarke's World of strange Powers.
In 1945 Mr. Clarke published a paper called Extra-terrestrial Relays in which he first set out the principles of communication with satellites orbiting the earth - an idea that became reality 25 years later.
As a result of that paper, some have credited the visionary Clarke with inventing the communication satellite.
