Former Speaker Newt Gingrich has officially ended his debt plagued campaign.
"It's clear Romney is the nominee and the focus should be on defeating Obama. We should not focus on defeating ourselves," Gingrich told disappointed supporters in Kings Mountain, N.C., the morning after Romney tightened his grip on the nomination by sweeping primary contests in five states.
Mr. Gingrich stubbornly clung to his campaign even after his major supporter Sheldon Adelson.
Las Vegas hotel and casino owner Sheldon Adelson, along with his family, kept the Gingrich campaign afloat with reported donations of more than $16 million.
With the Adelson backing behind him, Gingrich called it quits the day after Romney tightened his grip on the nomination by sweeping primary contests in five states.
