Office Depot the No.2 U.S. office supply retailer, is in advanced talks to merge with smaller rival OfficeMax and a deal could come as early as this week.
Both companies are smaller than industry leader Staples.
There is an Office Depot and an Office Max less than two miles from my house. They are both nearly void of customers most of the time - especially Office Max.
There isn’t much different between the two stores when shopping the Sunday sale ads.
At our Office Depot the really attractively priced computers are sold out by the time you get there. They probably only had one or two (maybe none).
At our Office Max they advertise big sale prices on computers they never have in stock. They will order you one but its never in stock. They try to sell you something else.
Bait and switch is alive and well at both Office Depot and Office Max stores here in northern Colorado.
Office supply stores are fighting a battle for relevance, with shoppers increasingly buying their paper, toner and technology online or at mass merchants.
