Almost 1,000 Irish people left Ireland each week last year to find work abroad. They mostly emigrated to Britain and Australia.
According to the latest CSO (Central Statistics Office) figures, 50,900 Irish people emigrated in the 12 months to April. Overall, 89,000 people left the country in this period.
The exodus has primarily affected young people, with more than 40,000 of those leaving the country under the age of 24. Around the same number were aged between 25 and 44.
Is it time to ask the last person to leave the country to please turn out the lights?
