The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s office have officially deemed a group of artworks as fakes.
The forgeries were supplied by Long Island dealer Glafira Rosales and sold by the now defunct Knoedler Gallery to various clients.
The fakes problem in modern art is made worse by the fact that they are easily faked. Many are not really art but decorative wall hangings.
It´s not difficult to fake blocks of color called White cloud over purple by Mark Rothko (upper graphic) and meaningless splatters of paint called Mural on Indian red ground done by Jackson Pollock (lower graphic).
