The Resolute desk in the Oval Office (shown above) was built from the timbers of a British Naval vessel that was used for Arctic exploration.
The HMS Resolute was not sunk as has been often reported. The Resolute became trapped in Arctic ice and was abandoned. It was recovered later by an American whaler and returned to Britain.
A desk in the Oval Office was made from timbers of the Resolute and given by Queen Victoria to President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1880 as a thank you gesture for the rescue and return of Resolute by the American whaler.
The desk is considered a national treasure and an icon of the presidency.
Obama uses it as a footstool.
