A Yahoo News report says Trader Joe's grocery-store chain has dropped a plan to open a new store in the center of Portland Oregon’s historically African-American neighborhood after activists said the development would price black residents out of the area.
The grocer, whose stores are found in urban neighborhoods across the nation, said Monday it wouldn't press its plan, given community resistance
The city of Portland offered to sell the land for the Trader Joe’s project at an attractive price.
Black leaders were against the project. It seems strange how building on a vacant lot and at the same time bring many jobs to the area would be bad for the black community.
Isn’t keeping an area depressed how slums are perpetuated?
