The deputy chairman of the British Medical Association, who suffered “awful” muscle pains while taking statins and claims that plans to prescribe them to millions more adults will “only benefit drug companies.”
The drugs are offered to patients with a 20 per cent risk of developing heart disease to help keep their cholesterol levels in check.
One doctor said "Statins might alter what is written on your death certificate but they are extremely unlikely to change the date."
Another said eating an apple a day reduces cholesterol as effectively as statins.
The report warns not to rely on evidence from drug company sponsored trials, which have been shown to play down the risk of side effects including diabetes, impotence, cataracts, muscle pains, mental impairment, fatigue and liver dysfunction.
This was of particular interest to me as I have taken statin drugs for more than ten years beginning with Zocor then Vytorin and finally Crestor.
