New Jersey governor Chris Christie (pictured), the only Republican charismatic proven vote getter, received a standing ovation at CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference).
Speaking to an audience that stands to his right, Christie concluded on a cautionary note, tacitly suggesting that the GOP has hurt itself by nominating candidates that are too conservative saying, “We don’t get to govern if we don’t win. Let’s come out of this conference resolved to win elections again.”
Christie is center-right and is in contrast to Rand Paul the Libertarian and far right Tea Party types who can win elections in selected parts of the country but will fall short in national elections.
The extreme far-right of the Republican Party claim all others are RINO’s (Republican in Name Only).
By their standards Ronald Reagan was a RINO. Reagan was center-right and would not have won two landslide presidential elections if he had been hard right. It was the “Reagan Democrats” that helped elect him twice.
If the Republican Party maintains a narrow hard-right “tent” in future national elections they may never again control the White House.
