This 100-year old advertisement is for a weight loss product: Sanitized Tapeworms.
In the early 1900’s people deliberately put parasite inside their bodies to help them lose weight.
Advertisements for the product said: “No diet, no baths, no exercise. FAT – the enemy that is shortening your life – BANISHED. How? With sanitized tapeworms – jar-packed.”
Incredibly some people desperate to lose weight still use this method today - allowing tapeworms to feed on digested food.
Tapeworms are flatworm parasites that have adapted to surviving in animals by feeding on the digested food of their hosts.
This means they can grow and grow until dangerous blockages occur.
They also produce larve that borrow through the intestines and travel the blood stream until the eventually imbed themselves into muscles where they form a cyst. These cysts cause pain and even death if the larve imbeds in the heart muscle.
A report at the link below says this is absolutely one of the worst ways to try to lose weight and it shouldn’t be attempted.
